Led a group project to where we had to come up with a solution to replace something in the market that was creating unnecessary waste, while utilizing test we had performed in our lab. My idea was to replace plastic straws with metal straws, testing between the different materials we had in our lab class to determine which would be the best fit.
We tested each material through 3 different test, which involved the Testing of Materials in Tension, the Heat Treatment of the Metals, and the Hardenability of the Metals. These test were to determine the best material of the 3 that would be a good substitute for the plastic straw since the paper straw was not getting any praise from the public. Our conclusion lined up with popular metal straws at the time which used some form of stainless steel due to having low thermal conductivity and having great strength properties to last a long time.
